Amodu given his marching orders

In the aftermath of the recently concluded African Cup of Nations 2010 in Angola, an autopsy of the Super Eagles performance was undertaken by the NFF executive committee yesterday.

Top on the agenda was supposed to be the issue of the overhauling of the technical crew and playing squad of the national football team, Super Eagles, in order to engender keen competition for places in the team towards Nigeria performing creditably at the Fifa World Cup finals coming up in South Africa in the summer

However, this was brushed aside  as NFF big wigs spent hours fiercely debating on a motion for the impeachment of the NFF president Sani Lulu, as many executive members expressed their grievances with the current management of Nigerian Football at all levels. Eventually, a compromise was made by the various factions .It was then resolved that Amodu be removed as the coach of the Super Eagles with immediate effect but compensated with the token position of Head coach of the home based Super Eagles . A deadline was also set to the NFF technical committee for a new coach to be in place before the end of the month.

The news of Amodu’s sacking has been hailed by a majority of football loving Nigerians despite a seemingly respectable 3rd place finish at the AFCON 2010 and  the achievement of  World Cup qualification. Many fans and pundits view Amodu as tactically inept, extremely predictable and over reliant on over-hyped and unmotivated players. These criticisms proved to be Amodu’s undoing and it is no surprise that his employers quickly turned against him. Several foreign coaches have been linked to the vacant position such as Peter Taylor, Guus Hiddink, Bruno Mentsu and Luis Van Gaal .

Watch this space to see how things develop as SA 2010 is only a stone-throw away.
