When you talk about one of the top class producers in Africa as a continent, the name ID Cabasa will surely be mentioned. His unique style of beat production fussed in highlife/afro-hiphop makes him a maestro in his field. He has produced for highly rated artistes like 9ice, Lord of Ajasa and many more. He is compared to Timberland and Dr Dre in the sense that whatever he touches, turns a success. Today, when you visit his Lagos studio, you find young career seeking artistes seeking his blessing and hoping he touches their work. However, the year 2009 has been surrounded by controversy over an allegation that ID Cabasa fiddled a song by RXD. Kingsley Olibeaku who is widely known as RXD cliams that he did a track titled “that kin thing” which he featured 9ice but only discovered that it was later manipulated and given to 9ice (allegedly).
The Enugu based artiste alleged that ID Cabassa did all these without his consent and 9ice has the same song on his album without featuring RXD. He felt he put so much work on the track that he had to miss his exams and youth service course just to make sure it was a success. He also stated that he has not been able to get hold of ID Cabasa about the issue. According to RXD, “I paid Cabassa for my beat, Cabassa is the pioneer, the main criminal that needs to be dealt with. I paid for the beat and it was used illegally. If that he took the verses and left the beat, it is a different thing but he took the beat, he took the chorus and he took the verses”. The track “Dat kin thing” is alleged to be a track titled “jule” which features in 9ice’s Gongo Aso album.
Nevertheless, all these allegations were severely denied by ID Cabasa who stated that he was shocked at the behaviour of RXD an artiste he actually helped to gain a bit of popularity. He stated that RXD was only trying to make a living off the name ID Cabasa. Acording to him, “One minute they are begging you, the other minute they are backstabbing you”. Cabasa declared that both tracks were his work and produced by him. Cabasa stressed that RXD came to him in 2007 to produce a song for him and also try to make it a hit song. Seeing his desperation, Cabasa took a song he had recorded for 9ice and requested RXD to sing on it. Hence, 9ice did the chorus while RXD did the song. However, he stated that the original song was all done by 9ice. That is, 9ice did both the chorus and the verses.
The Nigerian music industry is a scene that is capturing the world’s attention and we hope things could be amicably sorted and also, any negative issue that might portray the industry as a place for wrong dealings must be eliminated. Without a doubt ID Cabasa is a true talent and his popular energetic name proves this. The fact that all he’s touched has been a success tells alot about his creativity in line with his achievements and this, should not be tarnished.
